Evening in the Grotto
Join Mountain Sports Flagstaff and The Whale Foundation for a special outdoor evening in our hidden courtyard on July 30, 6–9 PM. Enjoy snacks, refreshments, and short films — all in support of a great cause.
Celebrating Kelsey Pfendler
This year's gathering also celebrates Grand Canyon river guide Kelsey Pfendler, who set out to become the first American woman, youngest woman and fastest woman to row solo across the mid-Pacific — and did it in style. Pfendler rowed roughly 2,400 miles from Monterey, California to Honolulu, Hawaii, finishing in just under 44 days and breaking both the previous women's and men's speed records. Hundreds gathered to cheer her into the Honolulu harbor, and her journey was followed by millions online. Come celebrate her incredible achievement with us!

About The Whale Foundation
The Whale Foundation's mission is to provide support services that promote, restore, and celebrate the health and well-being of the Grand Canyon river guiding community — through counseling, health insurance stipends, scholarships, and financial advising. The organization is named for Curtis "Whale" Hansen, a beloved Hatch boatman who died by suicide in 1995; his river community came together afterward to build a foundation that ensures Grand Canyon guides have access to the support they need.
