About The Book:

Explore Arizona’s 90 wilderness areas through the eyes of photographer and author Jonathan Buford. Arizona Wilderness: A Celebration of the State’s 90 Most Pristine Places features the beauty and diversity of Arizona’s wild lands. Buford’s breathtaking photographs and text take us to these special places, allowing us to discover their differences and relish each one.

In its 100-year history, Arizona Highways has proudly championed the state’s wilderness areas. From tiny pockets of riparian landscape along the U.S.-Mexico border to expansive swaths of forest in far Eastern Arizona, this book is a celebration of Arizona Wilderness.

“These splendid portraits of Arizona’s 90 wilderness areas should inspire each of us to read the book and head out to see and learn more about their history and ecology. And to renew a commitment to protect our public lands.” — Bruce Babbitt, former U.S. secretary of the interior

About The Author: Ever since Jonathan Buford drove his rusty Chevrolet hatchback from his hometown of Ashland, Ohio, to Gilbert, Arizona, in 2002, he's been fixated on the landscapes of Arizona. He soon found himself flipping through the pages of old issues of Arizona Highways and being inspired by the dramatic images. He spent hours admiring the photos made by the greats - Jack Dykinga, David Muench, Randy Prentice and Ansel Adams. Jonathan was mesmerized by the process of making eye-catching photographs. And he was even more enamored with the grandeur of the state's backcountry. On a backpacking trip in the Chiricahua Wilderness, Jonathan had an idea: to dedicate his life to exploring the wilderness and sharing it with others. In 2012, he started a brewing company and restaurant with that idea in mind; to this day, Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. aims to be a leader in its industry while celebrating the beauty of Arizona's wilderness areas. Jonathan always dreamed of creating a photo journal of Arizona's 90 wilderness areas, but the project was too immense and time-consuming. As the COVID-19 pandemic ground the restaurant industry to a halt, though, he found himself with the time to spend in the wilderness, and over the next three years, he finished a project he'd begun a decade earlier.
